Northern lights above the Icelandic landscape

Chasing the northern lights

When to come

Early September to mid-April, on dark, clear nights. Look for a cloud-free patch of sky and give your eyes time to adjust.

Reading the forecast

Clear skies matter more than a high Kp. Check the aurora and cloud forecast at vedur.is before heading out.

Where to look

Step away from the lights and face north. Switch off your torch and let the darkness reveal what is overhead.
